Grass Hill Farm is a small farm located in the Quiet Corner of Connecticut.
I raise purebred Herdwick sheep, working within our local climate and ecology to produce durable wool that reflects both this landscape and the Herdwick heritage.
The flock was founded through an embryo-transfer project in collaboration with Tufts’ reproductive team, using UK-registered Herdwick genetics. My focus is conservation breeding — building a diverse, resilient base of Herdwicks adapted to New England conditions while preserving the integrity of the breed.
The sheep graze mixed grass and woodland pastures shaped by the shallow soils and shifting weather of northeastern Connecticut. These conditions suit their hill-bred hardiness. Herdwick wool is coarse and includes kemp fibers, which add durability and resistance to wear — a natural fit for rugs, outerwear, and long-lasting textiles.
All fiber stays within the Connecticut Fibershed for processing. I work with local mills, handspinners, and makers committed to traceability and ecological care.
My intention is to offer a trustworthy, regionally rooted wool while preserving a rare hill-breed in a way that honors both the sheep and this landscape.
